
The German Africa Foundation mourns the death of Ruth Weiss, who received the Foundation’s Honorary Award in 2019. With her passing, German-African cooperation has lost an extraordinary personality whose life’s work and commitment have made a lasting impact on the lives of people in Africa and Europe for decades.

In a time of profound geopolitical upheaval— such as the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the growing geopolitical influence of the BRICS states, and escalating trade conflicts— Germany and Europe are facing major security and economic policy challenges.

With the death of former Federal President Horst Köhler, the German Africa Foundation has lost an active supporter of our work. Last week, he was the patron of the symposium commemorating 140 years of the Berlin Conference 1884/85. Horst Köhler was deeply committed to coming to terms with Germany’s colonial past, as he expressed in his opening speech, which you can read here.
