The German Africa Award 1995, presented by Carl-Dieter Spranger, Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, was awarded to Dr Brazão Mzula from Mozambique and Prof. Dr Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o from Kenya.

As head of the National Electoral Commission, Dr Mzula played a crucial role in ensuring the success of Mozambique’s first free parliamentary and presidential elections in 1994. He also contributed significantly to mediating between the government and Renamo during the civil war.

Prof. Nyong’o was honoured for his work in political science and his efforts to promote democracy. In addition to teaching positions in Nairobi, Mexico, and Addis Ababa, he served for two years at the United Nations Secretariat in New York and was elected to the Kenyan parliament in 1992.
