Welcome to the first jointly produced Africa Talk by the International Journalist’s Programmes and the German Africa Foundation!
In order to differentiate reporting and exchange on African topics in Germany and Europe as well as on European perspectives on the African continent, the Journalist’s Programmes launched the web video format AfricaTalks in 2020. On board for the first time in this episode: the German Africa Foundation.
From 17 to 18 February, the 6th AU-EU Summit will take place in Brussels. Originally scheduled for 2020 and postponed due to the pandemic, the summit is supposed to set the framework for the reshaping of African-European relations for the next six years. These have recently proved rather difficult: unequal access to vaccines and medical equipment, the question of patent revocation to boost vaccine production in Africa or the reaction of European states to the discovery of the Omikron variant by South African scientists are just a few examples that have strained the relationship between Africa and Europe in recent months. At the same time, the EU is competing with the growing influence and engagement of other actors such as China, Russia or Turkey on the African continent.
Where do relations between the African Union and the European Union stand ahead of the 6th Summit? What expectations do both sides have of the summit? On which topics is there agreement and where do the greatest challenges lie? How can the Summit contribute to a new strategic partnership to jointly address global challenges and create win-win situations? What role does the Africa policy engagement of other international actors play for European-African relations?
These and other questions were the focus of the 18th episode of AfricaTalks, jointly produced by IJP and the German Africa Foundation.
